I sketch and explore the idea of art from the perspective of a rank amateur
This week has been plenty warm and ‘day job’ busy so I’m pulling this prepared piece from the draft file, updating it and popping it out in lieu of something more profound. Do you have a hobby or pursuit that feeds your inner you? Leave a comment or restack this piece!
When I want to pause and hit the reset button I’ll often pick up a sketch pad and doodle or try to draw something. I find the exercise grounding, humbling and centering. Because I’m not that accomplished and it makes me value and recognize everyone who does have the talent, natural or acquired.
When our son packed up his studio and moved to another city he gave me a bunch of acrylic paints and some brushes. About two years ago I covered a piece of 3/8” plywood with some latex house paint and I’ve been dabbling on it ever since.
Weird how it grows on me. I think about it at the strangest times. I’ve learned some things while doing it.
I almost threw it out. During the winter I didn’t touch it for months. Over the last few weeks of summer I’ve been poking at it a bit. Even bought some new brushes and few more tubes of paint.
Yesterday I noticed that I have accidentally represented a dog’s face in the green, centre, bottom, just off viewer’s right. Well, it looks like a dog to me.
I’ll keep piddling with it. It causes me to feel a calmness and gives me a portal into my own self management.
Good for you. Let it guide the way. Don't overthink it. It is what it is and it needn't be anything more.
BTW Where did he move to?
